Evidence of filming

Here is a short video clip of the filming of the bad we did. As you can see the location of this scene is in our school music classroom. We felt that this setting did not look proffessional therefore we scrapped the whole idea of using a band and instead opted for random people singing the chorus of our song to add into our video. This makes the music video even more comical and fun to watch thus audiences will also enjoy it.

Music Video Analysis

In his book, Dancing in the Distraction Factory, Andrew Goodwin identified a number of key features which distinguish music video as a form.

- There is a relationship between the lyrics and the visual (with visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contracting the lyrics).

- There is a relationship between the music and the visuals (again with visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contracting the lyrics).

- Particular music genres may have their own music video style and iconography (E.g. live stage performance in heavy rock).

- There is a demand on the part of the record company for lots of close ups of the main artist/vocalist.

- The artist may develop their own star iconography, in and out of their videos, which, over time, become part of their star image.

- There is likely to be a reference to voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of women, but also in terms of systems of looking (screens within screens, binoculars, cameras etc).

- There are likely to be intertextual references, either to other music videos or to films and TV texts

In reference to our music video we have tried to comply with Andrew Goodwin's key feature's of a typical music video, this is because we wanted to establish brand identity. Our music video is designed for mainstream viewers therefore typical conventions are used. Audience will be able to relate to these concepts as they will have seen them on other music video's thus being familiar with the concepts we have conveyed in our video. However we have adapted and changed some of these concepts inorder to adhere to our music genre as well as adding our personal twist inorder to make our music video unique.

Evidence of Editing

We decided to stick with the original layout that we previously made because it conformed to the typical conventions of the back of an album. We left the album back cover black just in case we wanted to use a different background later on. We made sure to include everything need for the back of the album; song titles, spine, bar code, institutional information and the logo of the record company. We choose to have a simple font which is Cooper for the typography so that it could easily be read.

Evidence of Editing

The above are some image idea's we thought were effective. We picked out the best features from each image and combined them to create a unique look for our band. We decided to choose this image because the medium close up frame clearly shows the artists for the audience to recongnise. We also thought the pose was effective because the lead singer is the only one looking directly at the camera which catches audiences attention as it seem like he is watching them. We directed the band to pose in this way in order to catch the audiences attention, we told Jordan to look directly at the camera because he's the lead singer and would therefore be the most well know member in the band thus audiences will be more familiar with him. This pose was inspired by images that the Arctic Monkeys,The Kooks and Maroon 5 used in their albums.

Evidence of Editing

One of many problems that we faced was the main image being too small, we could not stretch out the photo to fit the whole background because the song titles would overlapped the two of the band members, making the album look unprofessional. In order to avoid this we cropped a section of the background from another photo and added it to the image we had chosen. However we still fealt that our back album cover did not look as effect thus we decided to play around with the layout and fonts inorder to create a much effective piece that connotes the genre of our music.

Evidence of Editing

We decided to blur the background so that it would look as one, rather then two separate images. The brightness and contrast of the image was also lowered so that the bright colours would stand out more which adheres to our genre. As the background had no apperent relation to the back cover we also chose to blur it so that the focus was taken off the background and more focus is faced on the band.

Evidence of Editing

We made the spines of the CD more clear by making them black, amongst the rest of the album which is brightly coloured this shows a strong contrast which makes the typography and the main image stand out. We also changed the colour scheme from white, yellow, blue and orange to yellow, blue and red because they are primary colours which strongly contrast with black and white. We also chose these colours because we wanted the album to look colourful as the name of the band is 'The Colours'. We also changed the colours so that they would stand out against the background because the previous white colour used for the song titles did not stand out.  We chose to have the track numbers and song titles different colours so that it would be easier for the audience to read  the number of the song they wanted to listen to.

Evidence of Editing

Because the album is called Canvas we wanted to give the image a canvas effect so that it would look like it had been painted onto a canvas. We firstly thought of having an image of a canvas as back image of the band because the band are the main focus point . We then slightly faded the image of the band so that the texture of the canvas would show through the band photo. However we decided that this was not effective because the image did not stand out as much after it was faded out. We showed the image to our peers and asked if the image looked like it had been painted onto a canvas. The general response was that the texture did look like a painted canvas but the image should be brighter therefore we changed it again.

Evidence of Editing

Another idea we had was to have the background of the image cut out so that the canvas can clearly be seen. Although this made the typography stand out, the final product did not look finished. It was also very difficult to get the edges of the image to bled in with the image of the canvas. The rough edges made the album look unprofessional.

Evidence of Editing

We changed the logo of the record company so that it would look more unique compared to the rest of the typography. We choose to merge the first letters of our group members names and came up with the name RSN Records for the record label name. We choose the Rosewood Std font because its bold and different from the rest of the typography. We added a black stroke to the font to make it stand out even more. This is also so that it represents brand identity with the rest of the ancillary text.

Evidence of Editing

The images above are evidence of us editing the music album back cover as well as making a few adjustments to the magazine advert. We noticed when comparing the album back cover and the magazine advert that both the music logo's were different. As a group we decieded that the logo used on the album was most effective as it looked sleek and proffessional, we therefore replicated the logo and put it on the magazine advert. We also got a second open from our media teacher who suggested that our magazine advert had too much variety of  different colours used on the fonts. This gave the album cover a less proffesional look and did not show continutity between the texts. We decided to change the colour scheme of the album back cover using the colours red, black and white . These colours worked particularly well as they represented continuity between our media texts thus creating a brand identity which audiences will be able to recognise when looking at our music products. To make sure we got the colour scheme and fonting right we compared the album front cover, back cover and magazine advert together to make sure that the concepts were consistent and identical.

Production Log

After giving my usb to the technician he has managed to fix my usb so I am on schedual to completing my ancillary text and research and planning.

Production Log

Im at school in the CLC right now and my usb pen drive has broken thus I have been unable to access any of my recent work that I have done. The deadline for the ancillary text and research and planning is tommorow . If the data from my usb is unretrievable I will have to re do all the recent things such as my evaluation again. I can assure you I am not in the happiest of moods right now as I feel as I have let my group down.

Evidence of Editing

For the in lay we have chosen the photo above. We chose this image because it is casual and realistic thus connotes a pop music band as the band members wear clothes that connote the pop genre.  We chose to position them on a bench to make Jordan(middle) the band leader stand out  so that audiences will be aware that he is the main singer. In order to make them  stand out, we chose to brighten up their clothes even more by using Photoshop by changing the satuaration and the lightness.

Evidence of Editing

In order to make the colour red stand out more we had to keep the hue levels the same however, increase the number of saturation levels and decrease the number of lighting levels.

Evidence of Editing

This process had been repeated several  times as we had to change the colour of Jordan’s jacket (middle) as well as darken the t-shirt of Ankit(right) and change the colour of Klevis’s jeans.

Evidence of Editing

Another idea was to make the band members look cartoonish  by using fliter, artistic and then selecting poster edges and placing the bands name and album name on the left hand corner with the letters being in different colours however once creating this image we did not like it because it looked like as if the band was aimed at a audience younger than 15 years of age therefore we rejected the idea.

Evidence of Editing

For the second in lay we wanted to use the pictures of the band members looking down to the camera. While working on this idea we realised that we had to change Ankits t-shirt as it represented the band Guns and Roses. We tried to change the logo by placing over a circle with bright colours painted on a canvas in order to tie in with the bands name and album name however that did not seem realistic as the image was taken from internet and did not blend in with his t-shirt.  Another problem we faced with using this image was that cropping out the band members and placing a nice blue sky behind them it was obvious that the background was fake and did not portray a natural look therefore we rejected this whole idea and instead used a different image.

Evidence of Editing

The image above are stages throughout making our magazine advert. We want to use our logo we created as a means of establishing brand identity therefore in our final product instead of the 'RSN Records' written in a temporary white font in the left and corner we will use the one created by our group. The same logo is also present on the front cover of the album

Evidence of Change

This was the magazine advert we were planning to use as our final magazine advert. However due to a number of opinions and suggestions from our peers and our media teacher we decided to change our final magazine as we felt it did not represent our artists and the genre of our music. We thought the magazine advert had more hip hop and rnb concepts such as the dark backgrounds and dull colours as apposed to pop/indie concepts thus the reason we changed the magazine advert. We used a different image on the magazine cover as previously we used the same image on the front cover of the album and the magazine. Instead of using the same images on both texts we decieded to use a different image on the magazine with a copy of the album on the page. Audiences would therefore be able to cross refrence both texts and be able to relate to the music being promoted as they would be able to recognise the artists. This also represents continuity a concept Andrew Goodwin highlighted in his theory.

Production Log

Today we had a viewing of our semi finished video amongst the rest of our peers. This was done so that they could give us feedback on what aspects of our video we needed to work on and improve. Today I will be working on my evaluation and completley finishing the ancillary text and research and planning so that in the next few weeks myself and my group can work on our music video and evaluation tasks. Tommorow we will be filiming the final part of our music video . We have had to leave it this late as our artists had various other commitments as well as being unable to book the room inorder to shoot.

Evidence of Photoshoot

The images above are evidence of our photoshoot. In the image above Rovena is postitioning the band members in a specific postion so that I could take effective photographs to use in the ancillary text.

Production Log

After re- shooting our photoshoot we have finally finished the ancillary text. After a couple of weeks of trying to upload our film footage and failing ,yesterday Rovena (part of my group) managed to convert the film footage and upload it onto the computer. From today all of our will edit our footage to make it into a final music video product.

Evidence of creating and editing the front cover and magazine cover

The above are screen shots of the production process of our ancillary texts. As you can see they are a few of the stages before the final product.
The image above is the image I used for the album cover and magazine cover. This image is the initial image I started with . After this I began to edit it in order to make it look like more of an album and magazine cover. An example of the editing I did to the image can be seen in the image below.

Production Log

Today I have uploaded our final music album front cover and music magazine cover. Due to a few issues with our camera we can not start editing yet until furhter notice.

Image used in Front Cover and Magazine

The image above is the image I used in the album front cover and the music magazine . I choose to use the same image in both texts as it establishes a connection between the two peices. Audiences are likely to make the connection with the album cover and the magazine cover if the same image is used as well as being able to easily recognise the music artists, thus the reason I chose to use it.

Rejected Images

The images above are the images we took as part of our photoshoot. Out of the whole photoshoot we selected 3 main images to use in our ancillary text. The images above represent a the images we rejected and decided not to use as they were faulty. For example the camera in a few of the images were not focused, we didnt feal that the position of the posing was correct, the band members in some of the photo's were not ready and finally the location of some of the photo's did not tie in with the natural look we were trying to portray.
